UNION-TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICES

September 13, 2006

So, who does Tiger Woods pick as the world's best active athlete?

Seven-time Formula One champion driver Michael Schumacher of Germany, who is retiring after this season.

Big number

17

Seventy years ago today, the Indians' Bob Feller, all of 17, struck out 17 and beat the A's 5-2 with a two-hitter.

“For what he has done year in and year out,” Woods said yesterday after arriving in London to play three tournaments in Britain and Ireland.

F1 racing “is the most globally watched sport,” Woods said, “and the pressure he has to deal with, it's been truly phenomenal to see him succeed at the level he has for so many years.”

Woods came to London after sitting courtside in Roger Federer's box for Federer's U.S. Open tennis victory over Andy Roddick.

Woods and Federer have been compared as the world's best athletes, with both men dominating their sports and chasing Grand Slam records.

Spokesman for anger management

Italian cyclist Alessandro Petacchi was forced to quit the Tour of Spain on Sunday after he punched his team bus and broke a bone in his right hand, Reuters reports.

Petacchi finished Stage 15 to Almussafes but was so angry he did not win the sprint that he vented his frustration on the door of the team bus.

“I know I've done something stupid, but I did it because I was very angry after having a real chance of winning for the first time for months,” Petacchi said in a statement. ... “I was so angry I couldn't control myself. There's no doubt I've made a mistake, but I'm a human being, I'm not a machine.”

There was no there, there

The Raiders' game Monday was their first shutout loss in a season opener since 1961, when they were drilled 55-0 by Houston. The next week, Oakland lost 44-0 to the Chargers, who were playing their first season in San Diego after relocating from L.A.

Parting shot

Ray Ratto of the San Francisco Chronicle, on the Raiders:

“The seemingly much-improved defense held LaDainian Tomlinson under 100 yards for nearly 23 minutes.”

Trivia answer

It's a restored 1930 Model A Ford Cabriolet Sport Coupe, according to AP.
