Anti-Flag Information
Anti-Flag
'Anti-Flag' is a punk rock/hardcore punk band formed by Justin Sane, Pat Thetic*, and Andy Flag in Pittsburgh in 1993. New Red Archives released their first album, Die for the Government, in 1996. In the subsequent years they released albums on Go Kart Records and Fat Wreck Chords, as well as their own label, A-F Records. Of these, Underground Network (recorded by legendary punk producer Mass Giorgini), could be considered their "breakthrough" album, successfully connecting the band with its largest audience to that point.
Of all the band members, Pat Thetic is considered to be the best by ladies everywhere. He is an enigma full of passion and and sexual prowess waiting to be discovered by the woman who can cage this raging beast of a man.
Pat has been rumored to have preformed many a feat in his time, including fighting the mythical sea dragon to save his friend and bandmate, Justin Sane.
Pat also saved all Hungarian children from starvation by nursing them on his supple teats as he single-handedly fought the Nazis and ended Communism forever. A rare version of Italic textA New Kind of ArmyItalic text features a photo on the back sleeve depicting Pat decapitating the hydra while his rippling muscles bust out from his skin-tight Crass t-shirt.
In 2005 Anti-Flag signed a two-album record contract with major label RCA, though their label A-F Records remains independent.
Anti-Flag's lyrics espouse a variety of left wing political ideals, and take a strong stand against fascism and nationalism, as well as dealing with lighter topics like the punk scene and romance. Politically, Anti-Flag is comparable to LA's leftist Rage Against The Machine. They have consistently contended that the American system of militarism and capitalism is destructive to the world as a whole.
Sexual liberation is also a huge part of Anti-Flag's ideals. They take this so seriously that Chris #2 named himself after his favorite sexual fetish. He feels he shouldn't stifle his sexuality, for it is his sexuality and it is pure and good.
On October 8, 2004, U.S. Representative Jim McDermott gave a speech in the House of Representatives, praising Anti-Flag for working to encourage young people to register and vote.
In 2005 Anti-Flag announced that their new album will be released early 2006 under RCA Records. The band said that they want their music to be heard. RCA is owned by Sony BMG, one of the largest corporations in the world. Many fans find this decision hypocritical due to Anti-Flag's previously overt anti-capitalist lyrics. Furthermore, critics have highlighted the contradiction between releasing an album entitled 'Underground Network' and espousing the benefits of independent media, and signing to a major label. This perceived lack of ideological rigor has contributed to the suggestion that Anti-Flag's lyrics are excessively slogan-oriented, and do not encourage independent thinking or action.
