Animal Collective Announce More Fall Tour Plans

For a band associated with the innocence and carefree nature of childhood, the Animal Collective sure do work pretty damn hard at what they do. Whether it's squeezing yet another delirious guitar swell onto a track devoted to Daffy Duck, or giving the fine people of Malmo, Sweden a sneak preview of their next album (which is never too far away, it seems), the foursome of Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist, and Deaken have their masked noses to the grindstone.

Need proof? Following the release of Sung Tongs last year, the band launched a two-pronged North American tour, Panda Bear laid down a solo album, Avey Tare recorded an LP with Black Dice, and the whole gang got together to howl at the moon with Vashti Bunyan for the Prospect Hummer EP. Oh yeah, and that whole time, dudes were fine tuning Feels-- their forthcoming LP that's destined to be talked about throughout what's left of aught-five. Feels comes our way October 18 and a lead single, "Grass", will be available in September both as a CD and a 7" for ya mamma's Victrola.

As is the group's custom, Feels will be followed with a heaping amount of touring. The group first heads off to Europe until late November and hits New York, L.A., and San Francisco immediately after. A full U.S. tour is expected early next year. Shows:

Andrew Bird Plans Extensive World Tour

Champion whistler Andrew Bird is hitting the road (and the ocean) for a multi-continental tour. Oh, and my apologies to the penguins up in Antarctica who just got their hopes up over the possibility of this Bird visitor, but when I say "multi," I mean Europe and North America. Anyway, Bird has all sorts of ideas in that bird brain of his (ha ha ha, kidding!). He's playing solo shows in September, France in October with drummer/multi-instrumentalist Kevin O'Donnell, and North America in November with Anticon's Martin Dosh. Dosh, another drummer/multi-instrumentalist, fresh off the spring release of his latest album, Pure Trash, will play his own short set each night between performances with Bird and supporting act, Head of Femur. Finally, Bird wraps up this extravaganza in December, opening for Nickel Creek. Let's hope they get along because I heard the Creek's a little bit country and, well, Bird's a little bit whistle-and-roll.

New Lemonheads Lineup Working on Album

When the Great Alt-Rock Cash-In finally sputtered out, Atlantic Records dropped the Lemonheads. Years later Evan Dando re-emergesd with a solo album on Bar/None Records and a steady girlfriend. That was 2003. Then earlier this month, while not many people were busy calculating that it had been nine years since their last album, a Lemonheads lineup consisting of Dando and two members of the Descendents appeared unexpectedly in Spain at the Benicassim Festival to play a hit-laden, career-spanning set list. That could have been a fluke, but no! It appears that the 21st century will witness a Lemonheads LP after all.

According to several sources, including the band's manager, this new Descendent-heavy incarnation of the Lemonheads have been recording at Blasting Room Studios in Fort Collins, Colo. The new album, according to MTV.com, will be released some time next spring.

Conveniently enough, the Lemonheads will be setting out on a tour once they finish recording the new album. They have one appearance lined up already: October 2 at the Across the Narrows Festival in New York. Maybe we'll even see a tour by the end of the year-- it's hard to tell. Evan Dando's webhome is under construction and there's no record label to contact. Perhaps he's just out for a pack of smokes.

Posies to Hit the Road Again Soon

The reunited Posies found much success on the road this summer. In fact, in a recent interview with UK zine LeftLion, bassist Matt Harris said the band's latest tour "seems to be pretty much on fire these days." Stringfellow agrees, describing the shows as "barnstorming, cow-fucking, mother-fucking." Well, we think he was agreeing. Point is, building on momentum from that tour and from their latest LP, Every Kind of Light, the band is extending the summer tryst into a massive fall roadtrip.

With main contributors Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow back on board after having veered off into solo and side-project territory (Stringfellow still tours with R.E.M., recently joining them on stage at Live 8 in London), the Posies released Every Kind of Light on Rykodisc back on June 28. Harris, whose band Oranger will join the Posies on tour, joined up for Every Kind of Light, as did ex-Preston School of Industry drummer Darren Minwalla. Dallas-based popsters the Deathray Davies will also contribute support, ditto Earlimart, Swords, and Lou Barlow (albeit only for one-night stands). Dates:

Talking Heads LPs to Be Expanded as DualDiscs

In early October, the entire studio catalog of the Talking Heads will be issued in DualDisc format, which has a regular CD on one side and a Dolby 5.1 version on its flip. Each disc-- Talking Heads 77, More Songs About Buildings and Food, Fear of Music, Remain in Light, Speaking in Tongues, Little Creatures, True Stories, and Naked-- is to be issued by Rhino and will feature additional content such as live performances, video, outtakes, and alternate versions of familiar Heads faves-- many of which will be presented as 5.1 mixes.

According to Billboard, highlights from the reissue campaign include video of early live performances of "Pulled Up" and "I Feel It in My Heart" (on 77), an alternate mix of "Burning Down the House" (from Speaking in Tongues), and outtakes such as "Dancing for Money" (Fear of Music) and "Double Groove", "Fela's Riff", "Right Start", and "Unison" (all in various stages of completion; from Remain in Light).

In recent years, Rhino has released numerous other Talking Heads collections: The awkwardly designed Once in a Lifetime box set, self-explanatory primer The Best of Talking Heads, and the long-overdue digital bow of the band's "other" live record, a recently expanded version of The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads.

Ex-Unicorns Spill Guts About Breakup, New Band

Although the Unicorns predicted their own demise plenty of times on their debut album, 2003's Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?, most fans were still surprised when the band broke up late last year. In fact, many folks thought it was all a big joke. Alas, this was not the case.

Alden "Ginger" Penner and Nick "Niel" Diamonds, two-thirds of the Canadian fractured-pop trio, recently spoke to Pitchfork about their band's demise. "There were a lot of factors, personal and political," said Penner. "I've always wanted to play music and have it available to other people in a way that's a lot more associated with punk music or even folk music and not so involved in a business. And there were differing point of views about that. That's the trouble with being in a band."

"That's true and that's not true," Diamonds responded. "We all had the same goals in doing things a certain way. [Penner] took it to an extreme and Jaime [Tambour, the third Unicorn] and I didn't want to go with him that way. Having a label, having a manager, having a booking agent--he wanted to do it all himself. We didn't want to put our energy into that. I love Alden, I respect what he does to the fullest extent, and I love his music. As partners we just couldn't do it. We had different outlooks." He added, "It was kind of a messy breakup."

Diamonds explained that the band had been on shaky ground since the very beginning, as he and Penner always felt more like musical collaborators than friends. A nonstop touring schedule that saw the Unicorns visiting Europe, Australia, and North America multiple times in one year didn't help either. Diamonds and Penner didn't talk at all during their Australian tour, and their partnership dissolved soon after. Diamonds recalls their last show, in Texas: "We played in Houston and it was just so obvious that it was our last show. It was a dark finale. We did a screw version of 'Tuff Ghost' and chopped it up live. That was fun."

Diamonds and Penner spoke to each other for the first time since the breakup just last week, when Penner asked Diamonds' hip-hop project Th' Corn Gangg to DJ a fundraiser for the Head and Hands non-profit health center in Montreal, where Penner works as events coordinator. Penner wants to heal the rift between the two: "We started slowly. We're just trying to be more gentle," he said. "And that takes time. We're trying to be more general about the things we talk about and not so intensely musical or otherwise."

But don't cross your fingers for a Unicorns reunion just yet, as both Diamonds and Penner are already horn-deep in other musical projects. As Pitchfork reported back in June, Diamonds and Tambour have been working together under the name Islands, with a pair of songs, "Abominable Snow" and "Flesh" already leaked online. Diamonds revealed that Islands' debut album, Islands Return To The Sea has been completed, and will be out on Rough Trade in Europe sometime between October and January. The band is currently deciding on a North American label and filling out the rest of their lineup to begin touring. They will make their live debut at the Pop Montreal festival on September 28, opening for Beck at the Bell Centre.

Diamonds dropped some hints about what to expect from the Islands album: "We're big Paul Simon Graceland fans, so there's a bit of a Graceland vibe. There's some dancehall influences, some calypso. We're just trying to get away from rock music and indie rock specifically, and make pop music. It's really much more varied than the Unicorns ever were. It's more diverse and sprawling and ambitious." He also added that a Th' Corn Gangg album is in the works.

In the meantime, fans thirsty for a taste of that trademark Unicorns zaniness can check out "Do They Know It's Halloween?", a part-spoof, part-tribute to those grand, overblown charity songs we're all so familiar with, written by Diamonds and Adam Gollner. What started as a goofy idea has blossomed into an actual all-star UNICEF benefit single, to be released by Vice Recordings as a digital download on October 4 and as a CD and vinyl single on October 11. Diamonds and Gollner recorded the song with Redd Kross' Steven McDonald producing, and then solicited vocals from a galaxy of famous friends, including Beck, Karen O, Thurston Moore, Peaches, Devendra Banhart, Win Butler and Regine Chassagne of the Arcade Fire, David Cross, Malcolm McLaren and Leslie Feist. So basically it's an indie version of Live Aid.

Penner has also been keeping busy, working on the score for the film The Hamster Cage, by acclaimed Canadian director Larry Kent, which premieres at the Montreal World Film Festival tonight, August 26. The score features a variety of guest vocalists, including Richard Reed Parry from the Arcade Fire / Belle Orchestre. "The music is very inbred," he described. "A lot of the songs just kind of refer to one another. Part of that is just the fact that I only have a limited amount of creative material inside me, so a lot of it is self-referential." Hey, come to think of it" the Unicorns' stuff was pretty self-referential, too-- how many songs had "ghost" in the title?! Penner has also been working on solo material, which you can sample at http://www.secretunicornsforum.com (uhh... guess it's not so secret anymore). He plans to tour eventually-- stay tuned to Unicornfork... err Pitchfork for details.

Spoon Schedule U.S. Dates, New Single

Just in time for back-to-school and the new season of The O.C., Spoon have announced that they will be returning to our fair shores for just one more North American tour before the close of 2005. It's been a good year for Spoon so far: the band has cracked the charts (Billboard this time, not just CMJ), done multiple tours overseas, and lead singer Britt Daniel is the most dapper he's ever looked on stage. You'd think a "Fitted Shirt" reference was coming on, but no, you'll get a "Lines in the Suit" one instead.

As reported last month, Spoon will be touring Australia and Europe in September and October. Then they’ll return to the homeland for shows with American Music Club, Mary Timony and Bright Eyes. Someone's little sister's going to lose her shit when she hears about the Spoon/Bright Eyes show.

If you, or your little sister, just can't wait until October to see Spoon, you can catch the band at ArthurFest in Los Angeles Sept. 5, where the band will be playing with Yoko Ono, Cat Power, Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, Comets on Fire, Devendra Banhart and a bunch of other people who never got the memo that being a hippie isn’t cool. Or, if you live in Portland, OR, you can head on down to Dante’s tonight for a little Britt Daniel solo action. We'd call it Spoon lite, but somehow Daniel by himself is a heavier show.

Feel the rhythm with your hands:

As previously reported, the upcoming Broken Social Scene (really guys, the eponymously-titled third album didn't even work for Sugar Ray) is the proper follow up to 2002's show stopping You Forgot It In People (after last year's b-sides collection release, Beehives). And as is the in indie-land these days, the album has already been leaked online through various file sharing services-- to which the band recently issued a website post addressing the hack this week.

"We were hoping that it would have taken longer before someone leaked it. But today is a beautiful day. We are all confused and happy… This is us… What you hear is finished. Finished is a word that can either set you free or be a curse…. We are hoping for freedom here. But... You know the deal and so do we I guess. We're grateful you are tracking us down. Go and argue and fall in love. Or go towards the ditch. It took us a while. Hopefully it will take you a while as well."

The first pressing of Broken Social Scene will come with a bonus disc entitled EP to Be You and Me. It will not come with a Marlo Thomas blowup doll. The two CDs, 2XLP and digital download will contain the following tracks:

>>Broken Social Scene

Stars to Tour with Death Cab for Cutie

All right, let's just come out and say it: The Pitchfork news staff accepts bribes. None of that penny-ante stuff you hear about radio stations doing, though-- we expect serious effort. For example, a couple weeks ago, we reported the Fall tour dates of everyone's girlfriend's favorite group, Death Cab For Cutie (mmm…Ben Gibbard in a tight t-shirt), but sort of glossed over the fact that the opener is everyone's boyfriend's favorite group, Canadian dream-poppers Stars (mmm…Amy Millan in a mini-skirt). Stars' label, Arts & Crafts, didn't like this much, but they just happened to have some priceless relics from the reign of Tutankhamen lying around. So now Stars get their coverage, and we get a couple of headdresses that look awesome next to the Sleater-Kinney posters in Pitchfork's office. Everybody wins.

Well, then. Last Tuesday marked the European release of the underrated Set Yourself On Fire, Stars' third LP, and the band is traveling overseas later this week to support it before playing the aforementioned shows with Death Cab. They will spend the remainder of their time in North America studying a screener copy of Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo to gain a better understanding of European culture. Beck Music Video Retrospective to Appear on Big Screen

While it may pain some of you aging hipsters to admit it, Beck has been around for a while now. And like most artists who've been around a while and also happen to be worth a damn, he's being given the retrospective treatment. But this isn't your run-of-the-mill career CD or DVD compilation. No sir, Beck likes to do things with a little panache. That's partly why he has been chosen by the Res Media Group to be the subject of the maiden installment of their Artist Retrospective Program. But what does this auspicious honor mean? As part of their annual Resfest, a selection of Beck's videos will be given proper theater screenings at the four first stops on their art and culture tour. The dates and locations are below:

09-17 New York, NY - Tribeca Performing Arts
09-24 San Francisco, CA - Palace of Fine Arts
10-01 Los Angeles, CA - Egyptian Theater
10-08 Chicago, IL - Museum of Contemporary Art

The featured videos come from a veritable murderer's row of directors, including Spike Jonze ("Guess I'm Doing Fine"), Mark Romanek ("Devil's Haircut"), Michel Gondry ("Dead Weight"), and even Mr. Hansen himself ("New Pollution”, “Sexx Laws vers. 2”). We've done some math and determined that you'd have to watch MTV2 non-stop, for 16 consecutive months to see all of these videos on TV, so yeah, this is a pretty sweet deal. The tribute will feature 18 music videos in all, and will go in more or less chronological order:

"Loser"
"Where It's At"
"Devil's Haircut"
"New Pollution"
"Jackass"
"Dead Weight"
"Sexx Laws vers. 2"
"Mixed Bizness"
"Lost Cause"
"Guess I'm Doing Fine"
"Little One"
"Round the Bend"
"Black Tambourine"
"Ghettochip Malfunction"
"E-Pro"
"Gameboy/Homeboy (Guero)"
"Bad Cartridge (e-pro)"
"Girl"

Of course, Beck won't be the only reason to attend Resfest. Plenty of short films and music videos will be on display, and Res will be sponsoring live events and parties each weekend. Oh yeah, and there will be a documentary about sneakers. Not Sneakers the Robert Redford movie, but sneakers like the shoes. Ok, maybe Beck is the only reason to go there. Regardless, if you're interested in procuring tickets, just head over to Resfest's official site.

However, if Beck’s visage projected on screen just isn’t intimate enough for you, here’s a friendly reminder of the opportunities you’ll have to smell his sweat this fall:

09-19 Minneapolis, MN - Wilkins Auditorium
09-20 Chicago, IL - Riviera Theatre
09-21 Chicago, IL - Riviera Theatre
09-22 Detroit, MI - State Theatre
09-24 Columbus, OH - Nationwide Arena *
09-25 Cleveland, OH - House of Blues
09-26 Toronto, Ontario - Rogers Centre *
09-28 Montreal, Quebec - Bell Centre
09-29 Boston, MA - FleetBoston Pavilion
10-01 Hershey, PA - Hersheypark Stadium *
10-02 Brooklyn, NY - Across the Narrows Festival, Keyspan Park
10-05 Fairfax, VA - Patriot Center
10-08 Camden, NJ - Tweeter Center
10-27 San Diego, CA - Rimac

America Braces for Finnish Psych-Folk Invasion

As our own Brandon Stosuy explained in great detail on this site just a few short months ago, the Finnish freak-folk scene is blowin’ up like yo mama after she ate a pound of baked beans. It seems that the country that once transformed a strictly agricultural, farm-based economy into a diversified, modern industrial one is doing the same thing with rock music! Woo!

Beginning this week, the Finnish psych invasion will become more than just outrageously expensive import prices and inscrutable accent marks for us Yanks, as some of the finest from the Nordic nation embark on a US trek. The "Voyages on Vinlandia (Part One)” tour will feature a rotating line-up of Finnish psych bands and a handful of American groups cut from the same tattered paisley cloth. Among others, Finland's Pekko Käppi (Stosuy: “Could be a field recording from a century ago. Stunning intensity from such a minimal set-up”), Islaja (“deceptively simple, fractured bedroom folk that's understated and ambitiously dismembered”), Lau Nau (“a scruffily polished singer/songwriter, one unafraid to trip between airy lullabies, eerie rambles, and Angus Maclise fireside jams”), Kuupuu (“blending vocalizations with drone and acoustic instruments to create a phantasmagoria”), and Taikuri Tali will team up with Wisconsin's Davenport Family and SoCal's the Skaters. Madison-based label 23 Productions put the whole shindig together, and a few holes are still in the process of being filled. For now, here's how it shakes out:

08-25 Brooklyn, NY - Tommy's Tavern (Islaja, Lau Nau, Kuupuu, Pekko Käppi, Tomutonttu)
08-26 Boston, MA - P.A.'s Lounge (Davenport, Feathers, Kuupuu, Islaja, Lau Nau)
