Thom Yorke Solo Album Revealed!
Amy Phillips reports:
Last night, Thom Yorke sent out the following message to Radiohead's W.A.S.T.E. fan club:
this is just a note to say that something has been kicking around in the background that i have not told you about.
its called The Eraser.
nigel produced & arranged it .
i wrote and played it.
the elements have been kicking round now for a few years and needed to be finished & i have been itching to do something like this for ages.
it was fun and quick to do.
inevitably it is more beats & electronics.
but its songs.
stanley did the cover.
yes its a record!
no its not a radiohead record.
as you know the band are now touring and writing new stuff and getting to a good space so i want no crap about me being a traitor or whatever splitting up blah blah...
this was all done with their blessing. and i don't wanna hear that word solo. doesnt sound right.
ok then thats that.
i think its out in july and im pretty certain XL are going to put it out.
love thom
So there you have it: Thom Yorke's un-solo album, The Eraser, is due out July 11 on XL Recordings. (Pretty cool that Thom Yorke decided to put his album out on an indie label, huh?) It was produced by Radiohead bosom buddy Nigel Godrich, and features the following songs (yes, they're all supposed to be lower case):
01 the eraser
02 analyse
03 the clock
04 black swan
05 skip divided
06 atoms for peace
07 and it rained all night
08 harrowdown hill
09 cymbal rush
Various sources, including Billboard.com, report that the track "black swan" will play over the closing credits of Richard Linklater's new movie A Scanner Darkly. You know, the one with the animated images of Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder playing characters in a Philip K. Dick novel.
As you probably already know (because we keep breathlessly telling you), Radiohead are on tour right now. The band canceled a show at Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall this past Wednesday, due to the death of drummer Phil Selway's mother. The concert has been rescheduled for August 28.
The press release for Yorke's album states, "At the end of the tour Radiohead will resume work on their new album, due for release next year." Nice.

Danielson Set Sail Across North America
Quanah Humphreys reports:
Yarrgh, Ships ahoy! That's right, ye matey, Danielson and his seaworthy five-piece set sail for four months of touring, starting tonight in Philadelphia. Shiver me timbers.
The new Danielson album just scored an enthusiastic 9.1 review from our own Ryan Schreiber, but now the unenviable task falls upon Daniel Smith et al to condense the massively orchestrated sounds of the album into an arrangement suited for live performance. There are still a few latter dates that don't have finalized locations just yet, but expect all that to be tidied up nice and pretty by the time the acutely happy Danielson hits town.

While Danielson is out touring the serene seas of summer, the documentary film Danielson: A Family Movie is screening sporadically at festivals, as well. The film's website says the film tracks the ups and downs of the Danielson family band as each member drifts towards their own interests, as well as founder Daniel Smith's mentoring of a l'il newcomer named Sufjan Stevens. Here's hoping for endless Osmond Family allusions.

Exclusive: Matt Sharp Talks Rentals' Return
Amy Phillips reports:
No more waiting...the Rentals' return is on. Today, Matt Sharp's synth-pop band announced that it has scheduled the initial shows of its first worldwide tour in a decade. This July, after a couple of warm-up shows in California, they'll head to Japan for a pair of arena gigs. Here's what the Rentals' itinerary looks like right now:
7-02 Solana Beach, CA - Belly Up Tavern
7-07 Los Angeles, CA - Henry Fonda Theatre *
7-16 Yokohama, Japan - Yokohama Arena (Nano Mugen Festival) #
7-17 Yokohama, Japan - Yokohama Arena (Nano Mugen Festival) #
* with Ozma
# with Asian Kung-Fu Generation
Yesterday, Pitchfork spoke to Matt Sharp, and the former Weezer bassist outlined the rest of the Rentals' touring plans: "We're going to come back and do a limited amount of shows in the U.S. We're not going to cover the whole thing, but we're probably going to do the major markets, and do some shows in Canada in the major Canadian markets, and then maybe do a little bit in Europe, a few of the major markets in Europe. That's still pending at the moment. But we're crossing our fingers."
The band is also scheduled to perform at this summer's Sonorama Festival in Burgos, Spain, which takes place August 18 and 19. "A very big part of my heart lives in Spain," Sharp said. "At times I almost feel like I'm Antonio Banderas' son or something."
In addition to Sharp, the current Rentals lineup features founding member Rachel Haden (formerly of that dog!), as well as the following newbies: vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Sara Radle (multi-inst/vocals), "synth master" Ben Pringle, vocalist/viola player Lauren Chipman, and drummer Dan Joeright.
"Everybody in the group essentially multitasks all the time," Sharp explained. "Everybody has a little piano experience, plays synthesizers, plays acoustic guitar...There's so many different combinations of things to explore within the group dynamic, and the feeling that I have with this group is that these people are really heavyweights. And we're trying to do things the right way and with a lot of integrity, and build a real family."
Although Sharp has been sporadically working on new material, the focus for the Rentals at the moment is perfecting new arrangements of songs from the Rentals' back catalog, drawing from the band's two albums, 1995's Return of the Rentals and 1999's Seven More Minutes. "A lot of it is reworking those old songs to represent the possibility of where we're going," Sharp said. "Some of it feels very new to me. Some of the older songs from the first album have taken on a totally new life. They have a real sense of where we're going. And part of it is challenging, and a challenge that I'm willing to meet."
The world tour will focus primarily on old songs; after the band returns to their home base in California, they'll concentrate on the next album.
Sharp attributes his decision to resurrect the Rentals to "really just a combination of a lot of different things coming together." "Having certain people come into my life at the right times, and the support of other people, sort of helped me get on that path," he said. "It just seemed like that's where we should be, and this is what we should be doing. And it just felt like the natural place for us to be."
He added that his former Weezer bandmate, Rivers Cuomo, was especially influential. "I think probably I saw Rivers less than a year ago, and he was really kind," Sharp said. "He's been one of the big people for me, who have been very supportive, going, 'that's what you should be doing with your life'...in the sense of writing pop music again."
Sharp spent a good part of the past few years concentrating on acoustic-centric solo material, releasing the Puckett's Versus the Country Boy EP in 2003 and a self-titled album in 2004. He saw himself headed in a more experimental direction, before the intervention of Cuomo and others.
"The average length of the songs on the solo record are probably seven minutes long," he said. "And I think I probably would have gone further in that direction, and I may return there at some point. I've always had the desire to end up finding a place in the world that's like [Talk Talk's] Spirit of Eden record, and where there's three songs on the album and it's still a full length album. And I was probably heading more and more into that place.
"Rivers and I got to spend some time doing some writing together, and he really started talking to me about writing more concise songs, that expressed a lot with a lot of economy. Instead of doing what I had been doing, which was taking as much time as you want to say what you need to say. And there were a lot of really good things that came out of those times that we spent together. There's too many people who have had an influence on why I'm at where I'm at, to say there's a single person like that. But there's certainly a part of it in there that he shares."
Sharp also credits Canadian sister duo Tegan and Sara, with whom he has toured and recorded, with helping him get on the path he's pursuing today. "They really helped me with the way they just conduct themselves," he said. "Those guys have more integrity than any group I've ever been around. The way that everybody that's involved with them are kind and generous...that stuff is coming from the core, and it's everybody that's involved with them, it's not just them, it's every member of the group, every member of their management, people that are selling their tee shirts; whatever it is, they all have that real graciousness to them."
Check out the Rentals remix of Tegan and Sara's "Walking With a Ghost" on the Rentals website.

Animal Collective Announce UK, Euro Dates
Dave Maher reports:
Animal Collective feels Europe. To prove it, they're touring the continent this summer, and the names of the venues and festivals they're playing have more consonants in one syllable than your emo band has in its entire name.
Such destinations include: the goofily-named Bad Bonn, Rock Herk, and Dour Festivals, and a place called Tavastia, which we think is one subway stop away from Travistan.
The website of Animal Collective's label, Paw Tracks, promises more dates soon, so check back here for updates. After all, we're in this flesh canoe together.

Man Man Hit the Road
Dave Maher reports:
Man Man may have already released one of our favorite albums of the year and completed one tour in support of it, but the too-oft-compared-to-Tom-Waits rockers are getting restless for their performance at the Pitchfork Music Festival, so they've scheduled another tour.
Starting tomorrow at Sarah Lawrence College, the band will trek across North America to the West Coast, where they will meet up with bitter bosom buddies Fiery Furnaces for a trio of dates in California. Then, hopefully, they will rest a little bit before their July appearance in Chicago at the You-Know-What.

Lightning Bolt Tour the World
Quanah Humphreys reports:
Japan churns out noise bands like Little Debbie makes snack cakes, so it's obvious that the country has a pretty healthy appetite for audio assault. While the domestic noise product in Japan is pretty fierce, you just know the kids over there are psyched about Lightning Bolt coming to town in June. As they should be-- a Lightning Bolt show is truly a momentous event.
Before heading to Japan, the little bitty duo with a whole lotta sound play a handful of dates across the UK, including the Sleater-Kinney-curated date of All Tomorrow's Parties. They'll share the stage with Japan's own Boredoms at both ATP and in Philadelphia in June.

Mary Timony Tours With Pinback
Chris Rediske reports:
As if I needed any more reminders that I'm getting oooooold, it's been almost ten years since Helium released their seminal (read: really fucking good) album The Magic City and then promptly disbanded. Of course, since then, Helium frontwoman Mary Timony has kept on making music, and though three solo albums in ten years can hardly be called prolific, she's stepping it up in the 06, recently signing with Kill Rock Stars (where she'll finally be labelmates with Linda Perry) for her next album. According to Timony's website, she's currently in the process of writing songs for the album with Devin Ocampo, who also worked with her on 2005's Ex Hex.
As a prelude to recording said album, the duo (made a trio on the road by bassist Chad Molter) are hitting the road, both in support of Pinback, and with their own headlining dates. New songs will be sung, new friends will be made, and hearts will be broken:

Glass Candy and Chromatics Launch Tour
Kati Llewellyn reports:
Glass Candy and Chromatics are two peas in a pod. Both bands call Portland, Oregon and the Troubleman Unlimited label home. Both are punky and glamorous. Both recently released dance singles: Glass Candy with "Iko" and Chromatics with "Nite". A press release even states, "both groups share a hazardous approach to making records." No kidding?!

Josephine Foster Embarks on Solo Trek
Quanah Humphreys reports:
Modern anachronism Josephine Foster is off to seduce North America, with only her guitar accompanying her operatic, classically trained voice. Of course, nothing says seduction like lyrics whispered in sweet, sweet German. It's the way most babies are conceived, you know. German babies, at least.
Foster has spent a little time on the road as Josephine Foster and the Supposed, but that's behind her now and she's all by her lonesome for the remaining batch of dates. Foster's solo tour for A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing takes her across much of America's Deep South before swinging up to the East Coast and Canada. Seeing as how these dates are a series of intimate solo performances, these provide the natural opportunity to place a glass in front of Ms. Foster and then kindly ask her if she can shatter it like all the opera chicks in movies.
