The fairest Review I've read about the game so far. Thank you Eurogamer, Got the game yesterday and I have been playing it since. it has its flaws but Damn pullin a 1000 Combo can be so freaking fun!
25-Aug-06 15:34:18
good review.. i find with these games that the true value only comes thru when you reach the end.. so id agree with the 5 rating going up to a 7 if you stick with it
25-Aug-06 15:36:23
Was expecting a 4. Would have given a 7 or 8 to the demo itself. Was planning on buying this based on the demo.

Liked the demo, I will pick it up once it hits the pre-owned bins though.

/* patiently waits for emergence day.

I'd love these sorts of games so much more if they didn't have any of the silly effects like flashing purple lines as you swing you weapon, explosions as you hit an enemy and a giant score in the corner of the screen.

I hate to say it, but make them a little more "realistic" (ala Dead Rising) and you'd have a riot of a game on your hands.
25-Aug-06 15:40:12
Trail of dead = Best band ever
25-Aug-06 15:44:54
360 gets another ordinary title to add to its let than glowing catalogue. When is the 360's killer app gonna appear (and don't say oblivion 'cos its better on my PC than on the "so called" next gen console)? Please microsoft restore my faith.
25-Aug-06 15:46:23
intersting - i'll get this when it drops in price.

another interesting thing abotu this game is the time its taken to get here - MONTHS.
25-Aug-06 15:47:12
7 isn't ordinary, it's pretty good.
25-Aug-06 15:47:33
That review, from what I played in the demo, is spot on. You know you shouldn't be enjoying it, but you do.

Dead Rising =/= Realistic. It has a zombie kill count in the screen aswell you know.

I got this on Monday from America, finally a Region Free game that I actually wanted to play.

Its alot of fun, sure there are a few niggles and the game itself is inherently shallow but I really don't care, I have fun when I play. I like the characters, the story is alot more silly and fun than the DW series of games aswell. Each new character unlocked is like a little treat, because while controlling exactly the same, they play alot differently from one another. Especially the water loli of doom.
25-Aug-06 15:52:31
Edit: Actually, I can't be arsed to argue.

I have no taste for this kind of game and was expecting a score below 5, obviously the reviewer has a broader palette than me, the demo was swiftly deleted.
25-Aug-06 15:54:59
Almost agree with disc. Trail of dead are excellent.
25-Aug-06 15:56:55
Water lolly of doom, heh.

I must admit I was expecting 5/10 tops seeing as EG tend to rate games lower than their competition so I'm surprised at it getting 7/10. I thought the demo was pretty mediocre personally and my opinion seemed to be supported by the middling 4 to 6/10 scores the games has been getting from other websites and magazines.

EG's review does nothing to change my opinion of the game and with so many better games on the way for the Xbox 360 over the next few months I really can't be bothered with, nor will I have the time for, N3.
25-Aug-06 16:06:12
Looking forward to this hitting the sales.
25-Aug-06 16:08:45
Darren, we can only call it as we see it. I was well aware of the 'other' scores, but hadn't read anyone's review, so this is my objective assessment. I just don't agree that a game as fun as this deserves a measly 6.
25-Aug-06 16:21:26
I totally agree with Darren and Krudster here. :)

Parts of my brain tell me it's average and derivative, but I'm just having too much fun with it and I'm being hypnotised by the constant slaying, the grahics, the seas of swarming ennemies, the visual effects and the sounds of collecting orbs. Then I unleash a lethal attack, killing thousands of bodies in one swirling move. That's when the reptilian part of my brain tells me I'm having fun.

Good enough for me.
25-Aug-06 16:23:06
I will have a bit of this.

25-Aug-06 16:23:48
Cool, was the story any good I didn't understand it when I played through.
25-Aug-06 16:25:49
Story's neither here nor there, but well rendered and neat the way it's told from so many conflicting perspectives. It's the usual earnest fantasy stuff, but some of it's quite funny and even endearing once the cynicism dissipates.
25-Aug-06 16:29:17
Told ya all it was crap
25-Aug-06 16:30:45
Nice to hear, I don't know if I have the energy to play through it again in English. That last boss was a nightmare.

'In effect, the ability to throw massive amounts of characters around the screen is a willy-waving exercise that doesn't work on a gameplay level.'

I think willy-waving is a term that could be descirbed the Xbox 306 overall. And the PS3 is about to run in screaming "mine's bigger than yours!" while Nintendo skulks around in the background mumbling "it's what you do with it that counts..."
25-Aug-06 17:08:19
"and you will know us by the the trail of dead"...

is this a smart comment, or a typo?
25-Aug-06 17:43:40
"the the trail of dead"

two bands for the price of one...
25-Aug-06 17:44:59
It should be '3N', not 'N3'.

Let's just hope Nintendo actually finds out, then, because as much as I am in love with the concept of the controller, I haven't really seen a game yet that interests me.
25-Aug-06 17:50:56
I had a good couple of plays through the demo, and at face value, it's exactly as the review described. Gonna have to purchase, I think.
25-Aug-06 18:07:06
and you will know us by the the trail of dead ... they got that one good song...

anyway, I thought EG would give this 5 or 6 tops. Maybe I'll buy N3 second-hand when I get X360 this Christmas.
25-Aug-06 18:35:01
Demo was alright,I'm not really big on hack and slash games.Like the review said the 'vaseline effect' throughout was particularly annoying,as was the slowdown, and I only managed a measly 850 hit combo :(Naa,the next purchase for me will be Dead Rising,I might get this when it's £25.
25-Aug-06 19:16:49
Wow, I wasnt expecting Eurogamer to give it a 7 - as they usually give DW-style games a right ol' slating (or am I thinking of Gamescentral?).
Sounds like it might be worth a buy after all - but I think I'll wait a month for SW2 to come out so I can decide which is best then.

(Actualy I'll be getting SW2 anyway as I collect those kinda games - but mabye N3 will have dropped in price by then, or be available 2nd hand)

I wanted to like the game but it's just average, the boss fights look annoying (I've seen the video review at GT) and quickly got bored of the demo

I might get it when it's £18

Based on the demo, this game is a fairly enjoyable but pretty basic version of Dynasty Warriors. I think because Dynasty Warriors has had so many incredibly similar updates its detractors always seem to ignore the things that made it so good in the first place (If you are a fan, obviously) and therefore don't comment on their absence in similar games.

The thing I found most glaringly absent in the demo was the sense that there were other heroes on the battlefield and other skirmishes taking place. In DW you always get reports from across the battlefield and you have to decide where you want to help out. There seems to be none of that in N3.

I still found it pretty enjoyable though and will probably get it when it drops in price.

25-Aug-06 20:07:08
i guessed the review score again
25-Aug-06 20:37:26
Confirmed my suspicions. Fairly mundane game and for £50!!

Drop the price of games.
25-Aug-06 20:39:32
VG+ is selling the US verison (region free) for £30 if that helps anyone
25-Aug-06 21:07:59
coojam: that flashyness and neon trails is what I like about it! RL = Boring.
25-Aug-06 21:30:37
Graphics looks poo. Thought 360 could do better.
26-Aug-06 00:23:36
Ok I've seen it all now from Eurogamer. This is one of the worst games ever made, all you do is hit X and that's all there is to it. It's the most repetitive game ever created and it gets a 7?.

Please don't buy this game people, go play the demo first to see how shit it really is. Or go read other reviews that are not full of BS.

Wait for Dead rising if you must have a game with lots of enemies on screen as this is a insult to gamers.
26-Aug-06 00:52:46
This site loves Microsoft and will always back Microsoft, they hate Sony, you can tell when they write articles about each companys...
26-Aug-06 01:11:38
This site loves Microsoft and will always back Microsoft,

They just can't win can they?

They'd just be better off dumping the scores for 360 games altogether since whatever number they put at the end causes someone to burst into tears :/
26-Aug-06 07:38:20
"This site loves Microsoft and will always back Microsoft, they hate Sony, you can tell when they write articles about each companys..."

Aw, this reminds me of the arguments kids used to have in the playground about whether the Commodore 64 or the Spectrum were best computer.

I think that was back when I was 8....
26-Aug-06 08:37:58
The graphics look far from poo!

Eurogamer are not Pro MS over Sony, they do enjoy whipping up some fanboy fever every now and then (Ok all the time).

Played the first 4 missions and really enjoying it so far.
26-Aug-06 08:40:06
N3 IS a very decent game!!! Sure it's not perfect, but I aint had as much hack-and-slash fun since my Goled axe, Rastan days!!!!!!

hehehe
26-Aug-06 09:46:43
I think this is the first time I've ever seen EG be accused of being biased against Sony. Especially in a review that doesn't even mention Sony.

Some of the people posting in this thread make Blackdog look positively even-handed.
26-Aug-06 11:29:24
"360 gets another ordinary title to add to its let than glowing catalogue."

I'm glad nobody has dignified this imbecile with a response.

Played the demo and rather enjoyed it despite expecting not to. The graphics are actually pretty good when you consider that there are literally thousands of guys running around. I would deffinitely consider picking this up if it's going cheap anywhere.

"This site loves Microsoft and will always back Microsoft, they hate Sony, you can tell when they write articles about each companys..."

Where were all these people a year ago, when EG where hyping the PS3 as "the REAL next-gen" and halfing other sites scores for certain Xbox 360 games?

Not really my kind of game at all, but I played the demo and really quite liked it. So now I'm confused. Might pick it up in the future when its reduced.

On another note. Please can everyone simply not respond to any platform fanboy stuff KillahSouljah posts. It simply kills interesting discussions. Discussing a platform's merits is one thing, but pointless accusations of bias have no logic in them and so can't be responded to with reason. Please don't even respond in support to this comment, lets just move on. Thanks :)
