3 Doors Down aids Katrina relief efforts

PASCAGOULA, Miss. - Members of 3 Doors Down have presented two checks to aid Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Guitarist Matt Roberts presented a $25,000 check Tuesday to Resurrection Catholic School, which he attended, to help replace library books.

Principal Darnell Cuevas said the school lost thousands of books when Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29.

"We've learned since the hurricane that things are not cheap, and this will help so much," Cuevas said.

In Gautier, guitarist Chris Henderson presented a $75,000 check to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance volunteers who have been working to aid victims of the storm.

The group is planning to stay in the area for up to seven years, said John Robinson, head of the Louisville, Ky.-based organization. Robinson said the group needed money to purchase building materials.

"This is really critical and I can't thank you enough. This is going to help a lot of people," Robinson said.

Living near a tent city that is housing up to 100 volunteers, Henderson said he was humbled when he saw the work that volunteers from the across the country were doing.

"I ride by here every day I'm home, and this is my community, and it's incredible the work they've been doing for our local folks and communities, not only here in Gautier, but all over the coast," Henderson said. "We're very glad to be able to help."

The donations came from $300,000 the alternative rock band, originally from Escatawpa, Miss., raised through its charity organization, The Better Life Foundation, at a benefit concert.
